Zambrano Scores & Assists F&M Past Marymount & Into Title Game 2-0 in Women's Soccer Season Opener

LANCASTER, PA - Forward Amanda Zambrano (Sr., Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) scored with 26:10 remaining in the first half and added an assist on a score by forward Amy Cawley (Fr., Fleetwood, PA/Oley Valley) at 26:28 of the second half as Franklin & Marshall College managed Marymount University 2-0 in the opening round of the Gray, Patterson, Cody & Taylor Women's Soccer Tournament at Baker Campus.

The Diplomats (1-0, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will now face Eastern Mennonite University, which used two second half goals to roll past Roger Williams University 3-1, in the tournament championship game at 1:00 p.m. on September 3 at Baker Campus. In the consolation game, Marymount will take on Roger Williams at 3:00 p.m.

Against Marymount, the Diplomats out shot the Saints 22-6, including a 12-5 advantage in the first half, as Franklin & Marshall held the advantage throughout much of the game play.

F&M jumped on the board with the game winner 18:50 into the game as defender Kelly Cassels (Jr., Downingtown, PA/Great Valley) ripped a shot which Saints' goalie Beth Dickey deflected away and to Zambrano who put home a blast for a 1-0 lead.

Neither team scored again until the 63:32 mark as Cawley registered her first intercollegiate goal off a double-assist from midfielder Maureen Kennedy (Sr., Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley) and Zambrano as the Diplomats held on for the 2-0 victory.

In goal, Robyn Jones (Jr., Titusville, PA/Pennington) made six saves on six shots to record her first shutout as a Diplomat, while Dickey notched 14 saves for Marymount.

A transfer from Division I Rutgers University, Jones now has 17 shutouts in 42 career games, an average of a shutout every 2.5 starts.

In the other first round game, Sarah Hurst assisted on the game-winner and added an insurance goal in the second half as Eastern Mennonite University rallied from a 1-0 deficit to record a 3-1 victory over Roger Williams University.

Tied 1-1 after goals by Roger Williams Caitlin Mayo and EMU's Liz Rutt at the 25:05 and 6:00 marks of the first half, respectively, the Lady Royals took the lead as Vanessa Rice finished a feed from Hurst in front of the net at 3:12 into the period.

Eastern Mennonite tacked on an insurance goal over six minutes later as Hurst punched in a goal from a scramble in front of the net for the 3-1 final.

In goal, Megan Banville made three saves for Roger Williams on eight shots, while EMU's Joy Shaiebly earned the win making four saves on seven Hawks' shots.
