Senior Sarah George made her first goal of the season count, netting the game winner in the 22nd minute to lead Franklin & Marshall over Delaware Valley 1-0 in the first round of the 2007 F&M Kickoff Tournament on Friday night. This win marks the first victory on the new turf field.
George put the Diplomats (1-0) up on the board early, scoring off a rebounded save from Shannon Summers' header off a corner kick midway through the first half of their season opener.
The Franklin & Marshall defense held the Aggies (1-0) to just four shots on junior goalkeeper Erin Roy, who made three stops for the shutout. Cortney Bower kept Delaware Valley in the game, making 11 saves in the net.
The Aggies posted their biggest threat with 19:03 left in the game when Elise Dauber's direct kick was tipped by Roy and deflected off the crossbar.
The Diplomats fired off 16 shots on the evening, including four by Summers and one by Athena Manolakos that nearly skimmed the crossbar in the final two minutes of the game.
Franklin & Marshall will face Eastern Mennonite, the winner of a 1-0 decision over Rutgers-Camden in the first contest, in the championship game tomorrow. Game time is 5 p.m.
