LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to No. 17 Johns Hopkins Wednesday night at Tylus Field in Centennial Conference (CC) action. The loss drops the Diplomats to 2-3-4, 1-2-2 CC on the season, while the Blue Jays improve to 8-2-1, 3-1 CC.
F&M held Johns Hopkins scoreless in the first half with stingy defense and strong play in net from Amanda McGowan. At the 44 minute mark, the Blue Jays had an opportunity to get on the board with a corner kick that sailed in front of the junior goalkeeper. Before Johns Hopkins could capitalize on the scoring opportunity, McGowan stepped in front of a group of Blue Jays and snagged the ball out of the air.
In the second half, Johns Hopkins tallied the first goal of the game with a through ball over the top of the Diplomat's defense to a cutting Kelly Baker to put the Blue Jays up 1-0. Selena Boro answered at the 60 minute mark with a left-footed blast from the right side to even up the match 1-1. The score was the junior fielders second of the season. Johns Hopkins pulled ahead at the 73 minute mark with a bullet from Maria Touloumes to make the score 2-1. Touloumes found space on the left side of the field and ripped a shot to the upper post to give the Blue Jays the lead.
With 4:50 left in the contest, F&M had a golden opportunity to tie up the game off an Alexa Yarish shot that sailed just wide of the post. Boro placed a header over top of the Johns Hopkins defense that found its way to Yarish but failed to find the back of the net.
The Blue jays outshot the Diplomats 18-4 on the game. Johns Hopkins also held the edge on corners 9-0. McGowan tallied six saves on the evening, including four in the second half.
F&M returns to the field this Saturday with a CC road game against Haverford at 1:00 p.m.
