LANCASTER, Pa. -Jen Korngut scored in the 60th minute to lead the Franklin & Marshall women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting McDaniel on Wednesday night in the Diplomats Centennial Conference home opener. F&M (1-2-1, 1-1 CC) puts itself in the win column for the first time in 2011 with the victory, while the Green Terror (0-4, 0-2 CC) remain winless with the loss.
After struggling to find the back of the net in their first three contests of the season, the Diplomats were finally able to break the scoring drought with Korngut's tally exactly 14 minutes into the second half. The junior midfielder dribbled towards goal on the right side of the 18-yard box, cut to the inside past her defender and scooted a shot to the near post past McDaniel goalkeeper Jan Woolley.
That would prove to be all the Diplomats would need to secure the victory, as the F&M defense held tough for the remainder of the contest. The Green Terror managed just two shots, each of which came in the latter stages of the second frame. F&M totaled 11 shots on the night and also held the edge in corner kicks (6-2).
Goalkeeper Amanda McGowan tallied one save to notch her second shutout of the year for F&M, while Woolley totaled four saves in the loss.
The Diplomats return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 23 at Ursinus in CC action at 7:00 pm.
