LANCASTER, Pa. - Amy Cawley scored the game-winning goal in the 13th minute off a pass from Shannon Summers to lead Franklin & Marshall over St. John Fisher 1-0 in the semifinals of the 2008 F&M Tournament on Friday evening.
Cawley capitalized on the Diplomats (2-0) first shot of the day, collecting the pass Summers sent over the defenders and sending the ball past Ashley Martin from eight yards out to help F&M advance to the championship game where they will face Delaware Valley, a 3-2 winner over Widener in the first contest of the day.
Kelly Zeppetella fired off a team-leading four shots and Martin came away with three saves on nine shots she faced for the Cardinals (1-2).
In a defensive battle that featured 16 total shots, the Diplomats scored early and held St. Johns Fisher off the board for Erin Roy's (Boxborough, MA/Middlesex) first shutout of the season. It also marked the second straight game F&M has won by a single goal.
The Diplomats had a chance to make it 2-0 with 38:19 left to play, but Summers had her header off a corner kick by Miriam Marcis saved by Martin.
Despite only taking seven shots, the Cardinals had back-to-back chances late in the second half taken by Zeppetella to try and even the score, however, both shots went wide right of the goal.
F&M will battle for the tournament trophy tomorrow afternoon. Game time is 4:15 p.m.
