GRANTHAM, Pa. – No. 10 Messiah defeat No. 4 Franklin & Marshall 17-11 in non-conference women's lacrosse action Tuesday evening. The Diplomats dropped to 9-3 while the Falcons improved to 9-2 this season.
F&M took an early 1-0 lead when Gabby Frank found Paige Moriarty 55 seconds into the game. Messiah answered with four straight and took the lead for good, 4-1, before Moriarty struck on a free position. Messiah went up 5-2 and the Diplomats answered with goals from Frank and Maddie Hughes to bring F&M within a goal, 5-4, with 16:41 left in the first. The Falcons went back up two, and after a Moriarty goal brought F&M with a score, Messiah closed out the half with two straight for an 8-5 advantage at the break.
The Falcons continued their run with three unanswered to start out the second and F&M matched with three of their own to make it 11-8. Natalie Delinsky started the run off a feed from Moriarty with Katie Groenke netting a score at 20:08. Moriarty finished off the spurt when she netted a pass from Delinsky.
Messiah netted three more and went ahead 14-8 at 11:47 and Hughes along with Caroline Kolva scored for F&M to bring the Diplomats within four, 14-10, with 8:03 left to play. Another three-goal run by the Falcons put the game out of reach and Grace Norley put the last point on the board when she scored with under a minute left in the game.
Danielle Harrington took the loss with six stops and dropped to 9-3 while Alexa Dipespo picked up the win with six saves.
Messiah had a 35-27 edge in shots and a slight 19-18 advantage in ground balls, while the Diplomats won 18-of-30 draws.
The Diplomats return to action on Thursday when F&M travels to No. 17 Catholic for a 7:00 p.m. game.
