Serpe, Dunne Lead F&M Over Swarthmore
LANCASTER, Pa. -- Cat Serpe and Erin Dunne both tallied five goals to lead No. 8 Franklin & Marshall to a 17-10 victory over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. The five-goal performance was the second in 22 hours for Serpe, tallying five last night in a 16-12 victory over No.3 TCNJ.
The first half proved to be a battle as both teams scored in batches. The Garnet started the scoring with two in the opening two and half minutes of the game to jump out to an early 2-0. F&M responded with two of their own on scores by Ali Kelly and Mary Mitchell to tie the game at 2-2. Caroline Krohn assisted on Kelly's goal and Mitchell scored unassisted. The Garnet struck again at 18:52 to go up 3-2, before the Diplomats rallied off three straight to take a 5-3 edge at 10:14. Dunne, Mitchell and Krohn all scored unassisted goals in the run before Swarthmore countered with two to tie the game a five with 8:47 remaining in the first.
F&M came battling back with a trifecta of goals to take the lead for good and go into the break up 8-5. Serpe started the run with a tally at 3:45 and Krohn found Dunne 33 seconds later for the second score. Dunne found twine again at 1:26 for the third score of the run.
Swarthmore struck first in the second half to make it 8-6, before Serpe and Krohn netted goals to put F&M up 10-6 at 24:14. Annalise Penikis tallied a pair of goals seven minutes apart for the Garnet, with Dunne adding one for F&M in between, to make an 11-8 game midway through the second. F&M responded with a 6-0 run to take a commanding 17-8 lead with 6:12 left to play. Serpe tallied three in the run while Kara Stanley, Krohn and Dunne all added a goal apiece.
Jen Noon had a team-high four groundballs and Mitchell picked up three draws for the Diplomats.
Kelsey Hoffman had seven saves and improved to 10-2. Michelle Ammerman took the loss for Swarthmore with five saves.
Both teams took 25 shots and the Diplomats won 17 of 29 draws.
F&M returns to action on Wednesday when the Diplomats travel to Ursinus for a 7:00 p.m. game.
