ALLENTOWN, Pa. – A pair of scores in the second half erased an early deficit in the opening frame as Franklin & Marshall edged out Muhlenberg 2-1 on Friday evening in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey play. The victory improved the Diplomats to 11-1, 6-0 CC on the season, while the Mules fell to 4-7, 3-3 CC.
The conference win marks the 29th straight CC regular season victory for F&M, the second-longest streak in conference history behind only a 44-game stretch courtesy of Ursinus from 2003-07.
F&M was forced to play from behind after Muhlenberg took the 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when a deflected shot off a penalty corner found its way into the back of the cage.
Unable to light the scoreboard after 35 minutes of play, the Diplomats found success in the early going of the second when Katie Cecere scored the equalizer just six minutes into the frame.
Cecere tallied her ninth of the season when the senior forward tipped in a Juliet Dalton offering to make the score 1-1. Eleven minutes later, Lauren Eastman found space in front of the cage and tipped in a Cecere shot for her fourth goal of the year to put F&M out in front at 2-1.
Stingy defense allowed only two shots for the remainder of the contest as the Diplomats hung on for the victory. Avery Koep (11-1) earned the win after registering three saves on the evening. The Mules' Sierra Lenker (4-7) took the loss after turning back five of the seven shots that came her way.
F&M held the advantage on shots at 9-7, while Muhlenberg had the edge on penalty corners at 10-6.
The Diplomats return to the field on Wednesday when F&M hosts Misericordia at 4:30 p.m.
