LANCASTER, Pa. - No. 8 Franklin & Marshall scored a pair of second half goals to blank Johns Hopkins 2-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on Wednesday night at Tylus Field. The Diplomats (9-1, 5-0 CC) have now won nine straight and remain unbeaten in CC play, while the Blue Jays fall to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
The Diplomats now own sole possession of first place in the CC with previously unbeaten Haverford falling for the first time in CC action to Ursinus, 5-1, on Wednesday.
After a scoreless first half that featured limited quality looks at net from both sides, F&M opened things up in the second stanza. The Diplomats registered 13 of their 18 shots after the intermission, continually pressuring the Blue Jay defense as the game wore on.
Dana Venditti put F&M on top in the 45th minute with her fifth tally of the year. After the ball was batted around the circle several times, Rachel Cooke found the stick of Venditti in front of goal, and the senior forward knocked it home from close range to put the Diplomats up 1-0.
In the 62nd minute, Kristen Zublin continued her 2012 scoring barrage with her ninth score of the year to give F&M a two-goal advantage in the closing minutes. Maria Guarisco fired a low pass from the top of the circle to Zublin, who ripped it past JHU goalkeeper Eliza Peijnenburg for the final 2-0 count.
Hopkins earned nearly as many penalty corners as the Diplomats (14-11), including a 7-6 first-half edge, but the F&M defense prevented the Blue Jays from registering many good looks at net as they held the visitors to just five shots on the night.
F&M goalkeeper Avery Koep posted her fourth shutout victory of the season, tallying two saves. Peijnenburg turned away nine shots in the defeat.
The No. 8 Diplomats hit the road on Saturday for a CC showdown opposite No. 11 Haverford at 12:00 p.m.
