Jan. 5, 2008
ARLINGTON, Va. - Kathleen Brown recorded a double-double with game highs of 32 points and 16 rebounds, helping Marymount defeat Franklin & Marshall 78-74 to capture its Holiday Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Diplomats (6-4) erased a 20-point deficit in the second half, but Terrell White went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final 1:11 to help the Saints (10-1) hold off the late rally for the championship.
White ended with 25 points and Brown added a 12-for-16 performance from the free-throw line.
Sarah Meisenberg registered her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds to earna nod on the All-Tournament team. Amanda Miceli contributed a team-high 18 points and eight caroms for F&M.
Down 61-41 with 13:34 left in the second half, the Diplomats slowly started to chip away at Marymount's lead. F&M went on a 21-5 run over the next 10 minutes, 45 seconds to get within three points after a Brittany Braxton layup with 2:49 showing on the clock.
Brown and White combined for 12 of the final 13 points for the Saints down the stretch. White made two free throws to make it 73-67 with 1:11 remaining. Miceli drained a jumper and Meisenberg struck from behind the arc at 74-72.
Once again, White sank two from the line before Meisenberg responded with two made free throws out of a possible three to keep it a two-point game.
F&M gained possession but could not get another basket and White completed her flawless streak from the charity stripe with two more good shots for the final margin.
Marymount took control of the game from the start, jumping out to a 17-4 lead in the first five minutes. The Diplomats cut the lead to singles momentarily, but the Saints regained the double-digit lead and finished out the first half with a 46-33 advantage.
The start of the second half was similar to the first for Marymount and they pushed the lead to 20 points for the first time at the 13:34 mark, the same time F&M decided to battle back in hopes for the championship trophy.
Beth Holt tallied 12 points and Braxton grabbed 13 rebounds for the Diplomats.
F&M returns to action on Wednesday at Swarthmore. Game time is 5 p.m.
