CARLISLE, Pa. – Dickinson put together an 11-2 run to end the third quarter, overcoming a one-point Diplomat lead at halftime on the way to a 69-57 win on Wednesday night in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball. F&M fell to 10-14, 8-11 CC with the defeat as the Red Devils improved to 17-7, 14-5 with the victory.
A closely contested first half saw the Diplomats take a 29-28 lead into the third quarter, an advantage that F&M held onto early in the period after a layup from Sarah Haddon gave the visitors a 37-36 lead with 6:32 left. However, the Red Devils upped the defensive pressure and slowly built an 11-2 run to end the quarter and take a 47-39 lead.
Kristin Hamill scored a basket on each of the Diplomats' first two possessions, but the Red Devils continued to extend the lead thanks to two layups and a three in the first two minutes of the fourth. The Dickinson advantage never grew larger than 12, but never shrank to less than eight the rest of the way as the hosts emerged with the 69-57 win. Five different players scored for F&M in the final frame, but the deficit proved too great as the Red Devils scored 22 points in the period.
Two threes from Ashlyn Peterson in the early going kept the score close, with the Red Devils holding a slim 9-8 edge after her second triple at 4:09 in the first. Dickinson closed the quarter with a quick 8-2 run, giving the hosts a 17-10 advantage after one.
Dickinson extended that lead to 19-10 early in the second, but four different Diplomats scored in a 12-0 response to take a 22-19 lead after two baskets from Brown at 6:32 in the second. Two free throws from Haddon gave F&M a 29-25 lead late in the second, eventually taking a one-point, 29-28 edge into halftime.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday, celebrating Senior Day and hosting Swarthmore at 1:00 p.m. in the final contest of the season.
