F&M Unable to Erase First-Half Deficit

LANCASTER, Pa. – Randolph-Macon built an early lead on Saturday afternoon, eventually defeating Franklin and Marshall 64-49 in nonconference women's basketball action. The Diplomats fell to 4-6 with the defeat, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 6-4.

A 14-1 run from the Yellow Jackets set the tone early on as the Diplomats missed their first seven attempts from the field. A buzzer-beating three from AnnMarie DiCarlo at the end of the first cut into the deficit, but after one the visitors led 16-7.

Randolph-Macon extended that advantage to 17, a lead the Diplomats would never fully erase, thanks to points from five different scorers. Two threes from Haley Pilone fueled an 8-0 F&M response, but the Yellow Jackets nonetheless entered halftime with a double-digit, 29-18 edge.

The teams traded baskets early in the third, with Randolph-Macon holding a 14-point advantage at 38-24 with 6:08 left. Neither team gained too much momentum for the remainder of the quarter, but the Diplomats got another buzzer-beater as Sarosha Parsons knocked down a triple to end the quarter at 43-33.

F&M continued to cut into the Randolph-Macon lead, getting as close as six on two occasions. Still, it was too little too late as the Yellow Jackets closed the game with a 9-0 run to grab the 64-49 victory.

Pilone led the Diplomat offense with 13, and tied the team high with six boards. Erica Brown finished with seven points and six rebounds, while Parsons added eight points and Sarah Pisani dished out six assists.

The Yellow Jackets shot 42.4 percent from the field and scored 42 points in the paint to hold off a scrappy Diplomat effort.

F&M returns to action next Friday, tipping off 2017 with a visit to Alvernia at 6:00 p.m.
