The 2013-14 Diplomats
F&M aims for a return to the Centennial Conference (CC) Playoffs after falling short in 2012. With a core group of upperclassmen, mixed with some key newcomers, reaching the playoffs is an obtainable goal.
With the loss of All-America Honorable Mention Alexa Barbush, fourth-year head coach Kirsten Richter will need to replace a vital component of the team as Barbush led the Centennial Conference (CC) last season in scoring with 19.2 points per game.
The Diplomats also must find a way to replace the energetic Elizabeth Snyder who averaged 34.0 minutes per game last season, and Colleen Bott, who played in all 25 games.
F&M returns nine letter winners from last year's team, including four players who started more than ten contests. Four freshmen join the team; a group that consists of two guards and two forwards.
F - Kristina McCarthy, Sr.
F - Emma Lisle, Sr.
G - Kara Bacile, Jr.
G - Hannah Rose Nussbaum, So.
Players to Watch
The key returners will be asked to step up as leaders on the court. Last season, McCarthy started in 20 contests and led the Diplomats in rebounds at 9.5 per game. Lisle score more than 10 points in five games and was second for the Diplomats with 8.2 rebounds per game. Also returning is senior Sam Plunkett, who made eleven three-pointers a season ago.
Bacile played in all 25 games while averaging nearly 20 minutes in each, while Nussbaum started 13 games at guard and scored a career-high 12 points in a win over Lycoming on Nov. 17, 2012. Seniors Shea Costantino and Lisle will captain the squad for the upcoming season.
The Road Ahead
After opening the season at the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic, the Diplomats head to Westminster, Md. on Nov. 20 for their first CC matchup of the season where F&M takes on McDaniel at 7:00 p.m.
The Diplomats' first home CC game will be Tuesday, Nov. 26, when F&M battles Johns Hopkins, a team that F&M went 1-1 against last year.
At the end of December, the Diplomats head to California to play in the Purple & Gold Poet Classic. They will take on Lewis & Clark (Sunday, Dec. 29 at 2:00 p.m.) and the host, Whittier (Monday, Dec. 30 at 4:00 p.m.).
