F&M Dropped by Drexel, Suffer Heartbreaking Loss to Hofstra

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall hosted a pair of Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) opponents on Saturday in Mayser, falling to Drexel by a 40-6 score, before nearly forcing criteria against Hofstra, but ultimately being edged by a 22-21 tally.

The Diplomats fell 3-7, 1-6 EIWA on the year, while Drexel now stands at 10-5, 6-3 EIWA and Hofstra improved to 6-7, 2-4 EIWA.

In the opening match against Drexel, the Diplomats fell behind early after a major decision at 125 and a pin at 133. Paddy Quinlan (141) fought hard and was down just 4-2 heading into the third before a late flurry of points from Drexel resulted in an 11-3 major decision loss.

Emmett LiCastri delivered F&M its first win at 157, notching a first-period takedown en route to the 5-3 decision. Anthony Mancini (184) also secured a decision win for the Diplomats, also registering a first-period takedown before a third-period escape and riding time point sealed a 4-0 win.

Against Hofstra, Edgar Garcia managed a third-period escape to force sudden victory at 125 but was taken down in the opening period for a tough 3-1 loss. Dan Martoccio followed with a clutch pin early in the second period of the 133 bout to give F&M a 6-3 lead, before a forfeit from the Pride at 141 made it a 12-3 score.

Each team followed with a decision, allowing the Diplomats to keep a nine-point edge at 15-6 with LiCastri's second win of the day, a 10-4 decision at 157 pounds. Robbie King tacked on at 165, sealing a close 8-4 decision with a key takedown in the final minute of the third to make it an 18-6 contest.

Hofstra followed with a 14-5 major at 174 that pulled the Pride within eight at 18-10. With F&M forfeiting both 197 and 285 pounds, the Diplomats went into the final bout at 184 down by four points.

Mancini was strong once again, earning two takedowns to win his match by a 6-2 decision score, but falling short of the major decision that would have forced criteria.

The Diplomats return to the mat next Saturday, hosting George Mason at Mayser for senior night at 6:00 p.m.
