Diplomats Battle Bison

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall fell to Bucknell 30-10 in Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) wrestling action Friday night. The Diplomats move to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the EIWA with the loss, while the Bison improve to 5-8, 2-1 EIWA.

Trailing 7-0 after the opening two bouts, the Diplomats came storming back into the match with consecutive wins by Richard Durso and Andrew Murano at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively.

Durso, ranked 18th in the country, captured his sixth straight victory and 17th win in his last 18 bouts with a 12-1 major decision over Derrik Russell. The F&M sophomore broke a scoreless tie halfway through period one with a takedown for the lone points of the opening frame. Starting on the bottom in period two, Durso recorded an impressive reversal, flipping Russell to the ground just eight seconds in, before adding a three-point nearfall shortly thereafter to jump out to a 7-0 advantage. He put together another quick start in period three to push out to a comfortable lead, registering a takedown with 1:22 remaining and a two-point nearfall with just under a minute left to make the score 11-1. His 4:35 seconds of riding time gave him the final 12-1 edge.

At 149, Murano notched his 22nd victory of the season with a 7-1 decision against Adam Healey to even the score at 7-7. Murano used an aggressive approach from the start, taking an early 2-0 lead with a takedown just 26 seconds into period one. The junior captain delivered another early takedown in the second period to go up 4-0, before Healey tallied an escape to get on the board. Murano then continued his dominance in the match, taking Healey to the ground once more with 42 seconds left in period two to grab a 6-1 edge. A scoreless third frame ensued, and Murano's 4:16 of riding time made the final count 7-1.

In the closest bout of the night, Colin Gironda and Robert Schlitt grappled into three overtimes, with Gironda coming out on top, 6-3. Trailing 2-0 heading into the second frame, Gironda managed an escape to pull within 2-1, and then recorded a takedown near the edge of the circle with just one second remaining in the period to take a 3-2 advantage. Schlitt posted an escape in the third to even things up at 3-3, sending the bout into overtime. Two scoreless extra periods followed, before Gironda finished off his counterpart with an escape and a quick takedown for his seventh victory of the year.

F&M returns home for a pair of duals next Saturday. The Diplomats will take on EIWA foe Princeton at 2:00 p.m., before squaring off against George Mason at 7:00 p.m.
