Hornets Hand F&M Setback

Nov 29, 2008

DOVER, Del. - Delaware State's wrestling team won six of ten bouts to overcome Franklin & Marshall for the first time in the series' history between the schools. The Hornets (2-1) swept 141 through 165, and then the final two bouts to take the tenth meeting with the Diplomats (0-2) 20-16.

F&M's Justin Herbert (8-4) picked up the only pin of the afternoon, decking Kyle Skinner with one second left in the second period for his second pin of the season. The fall ended Delaware State's four-bout run on the scoreboard and was the 25th of Herbert's career, putting him within five of the school's career record.

Herbert's fall was followed by Jimmy Schulz's (3-4) 14-9 decision of William Farrell to give F&M a 16-13 lead with two bouts remaining on the afternoon. Shawn Nowrey handed a major decision to the Diplomats' Colin Ely (4-6) to make it 17-16 in favor of Delaware State. The Hornets' Jamar Beckett took down Dan Canfield (0-3), who bumped up to heavyweight to cover for the injured Nico Somers, 6-2 to wrap up DSU's first win in the series.

Freshman, Matt Murray (1-6), picked up his first win at F&M with a 9-7 decision over Kelvin Waltford. That gave the Diplomats an early 7-0 lead following Steven Sabreen's (2-5) major decision of Tad Broomall at 15-3.

Al Ginaforti (5-6) gave #13 Matt Cathell a tight match at 149-pounds, but fell 9-6.

The Diplomats return to action Tuesday evening at Mayser Center when F&M hosts Bucknell in an EIWA match.
