LANCASTER, PA - The Franklin & Marshall College men's tennis team improved to 10-5 on the season as the Diplomats defeated McDaniel College 7-0 in Centennial Conference action.
The win raises the Diplomats to double-digits in wins for the first time since the 1999 team went 12-4. Overall, it marks the 32nd 10+ win season for the program in its 99-year history.
The Diplomats took control of the match early as Andrew Mayer (So., West Chester, PA/West Chester East) and Ben Michelman (Fr., Severna Park, MD/Severn School) rolled to an 8-5 win at #2 following an 8-5 win by McDaniel's Aaron Taylor and Brian Kastner at #1 doubles. In the #3 match, Charlie Alston (So., Summit, NJ/University School) and George Stamboulis (So., Ekali, Greece/American Community School) knocked off Josh Loar and Adam Scott 8-2 as Franklin & Marshall College earned the doubles point.
Franklin & Marshall carried the momentum through all seven singles matches as the Diplomats swept the Green Terror (1-5, 0-4 Centennial Conference) to record their second home shutout of the season following a 7-0 victory on March 26 over Penn-State Berks.
At #1 singles, Alex Chester (Jr., Coral Gables, FL/Palmer-Trinity) picked up a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Taylor to start the string of victories. Alex Levy (So., West Windsor, NJ/Lawrenceville) followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #2 and Mayer recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win at #3 to clinch the match with the team's fourth point.
Dan Lindenberg (Jr., Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at #4, Alex Sanchez-Sierra (Jr., Tangier, Morocco/American College of Tangier) notched a 6-0, 6-1 victory at #5 and Michelman picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win at #6 to conclude the match.
The victory improves F&M to 39-1 all-time against McDaniel, including a 36 match-winning streak, as the Green Terror last defeated the Diplomats in 1959. Further, the shutout continues a seven year streak in which Franklin & Marshall has blanked McDaniel since the Green Terror fell 6-1 on April 8, 1997 in Westminster, Maryland.
Franklin & Marshall (10-5, 5-2 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 19 at home versus Dickinson. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m.
