Silverberg, MacArthur Take Championship at Villanova Invitational
VILLANOVA, Pa. – Ross Silverberg and William MacArthur of Franklin & Marshall took home the championship this past weekend in men's tennis action at the Villanova Invitational. The duo defeated Chris Seitz and Ryan Peyton of Division I Villanova 2-1 in the championship match.
The tournament used a "two singles, one doubles" format, in which pairs of doubles teams competed against each other, before splitting up to compete in two singles matches. The team that won at least two out of three matches moved on in the main draw, while the losing teams competed in a consolation bracket.
On Friday, Silverberg and MacArthur defeated Mark Miller and Max Levine of Villanova 8-3 in doubles, while Silverberg downed Miller 6-4, 6-3 in singles to move into the next round. The pair then defeated Preston Poon and William Lennon of Swarthmore on Saturday to punch their ticket to the championship matchup against Villanova. The F&M duo edged the Garnet squad 9-7 in doubles, before Silverberg ousted Poon 6-4, 6-0 in head-to-head action.
In the championship the pair of Diplomats won their doubles contest 8-4. Silverberg sealed the victory over Villanova with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 singles win against Seitz.
After a narrow 2-1 loss in the opening round to eventual runner-ups Seitz and Peyton, Nolan Bacchieri and Doug Kaplan of F&M notched back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket to take ninth. They defeated the Monmouth team of Matt Colonnese and Eric Pierce 2-1 on Saturday, before edging Villanova's Miller and Levine 2-1 on Sunday to secure ninth.
Alec Tunner and Hamza Pataudi went 1-2 throughout the weekend to nab 12th. The duo picked up their victory on Saturday with a 3-0 margin over Chestnut Hill's Jeremy Solema and Patrick Villafuerte Joson.
Two members of the men's tennis team also competed at the Centennial Conference Invite at Swarthmore this past weekend. In singles action, Parint Lertdumrikam defeated Daniel Xinis of McDaniel 6-2, 6-4 in the consolation round. Kazuhiro Tomioka narrowly dropped his consolation match to Malik Mubeen of Swarthmore 7-5, 6-3.
F&M returns to the court the weekend of Sept. 29th to compete in the ITA Southeast Regional Championships at Mary Washington.
