Diplomats Open Spring Season 2-2
ORLANDO, Fla. – Franklin & Marshall's men's tennis team opened its 2012 spring season with several non-conference match-ups on its spring break trip to Florida. Half way through the week, the squad has gone 2-2, defeating UMass-Boston and Emory-Oxford, while falling to Valparaiso and Monmouth (Ill.).
In the first match, F&M took a quick 3-0 lead with wins at each doubles spot. At No. 1 Nolan Bacchieri teamed up with Tommy Weibye for an 8-5 victory. Peter Bookman and Cameron Relic were victors at No. 2 with a 8-4 win, while Sam Stone and Alex Turner picked up the win in the third spot with a commanding 8-1 score, heading into the singles matches.
The Diplomats took three out of the four singles matches to pull away with a 6-1 win. Bacchieri defeated UMass-Boston's David Hernandez 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1 and Kazuhiro Tomioka bested Charles Lai 6-4, 6-0, at No. 3. Stone wrapped things up with an 8-1 win at No. 5. The Beacons picked up their lone victory as Alex Loyer defeated Eric Rouff, 1-6,7-5, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot.
F&M fell Monday afternoon to Valparaiso, 5-2. The Diplomats picked up their lone victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Ross Silverberg took down Chris Baum 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, and Weibye won 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 against Kevin DeHerrera.
Bouncing back on Tuesday, the Diplomats cruised past Emory-Oxford 9-0. Silverberg and Rouff each collected 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles, while William MacArthur and Bacchieri both took 6-1, 6-1 victories. Weibye nabbed a 6-0, 6-1 win and Relic won with scores of 6-2,6-0.
In doubles action, Relic and Bookman teamed up to sweep the Eagles team of Martin Porterfield and Gregory Sefian 8-0. The duo of Silverberg and MacArthur defeated Gustavo Linde and Zachary Hersman 8-1, while Bacchieri and Weibye combined to take down Alex Day and Michael Lem 8-2.
In their last match on Tuesday evening, F&M fell to Monmouth (Ill.) 6-3. The lone singles winner for the Diplomats was No. 6 Tomioka, who defeated Tyler Lampe 6-1, 6-4.
The final two wins for F&M came in doubles play, with the Diplomats No. 2 and No. 3 teams winning. The team of Bacchieri and Weibye took down Chris Utterback and Parker Featherston 9-7, while Bookman and Relic teamed up to defeat Lampe and Chris Franco 8-5.
The Diplomats continue spring break play on March 15 at 11:30 am, when F&M takes on N.C. Central.
