FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Eight Franklin & Marshall men's tennis players represented the Diplomats at the ITA Southeast Regionals hosted by Mary Washington this weekend.
Ross Silverberg won the B2 draw, dominating his opponents along the way. Silverberg defeated Dylan Young of Christopher Newport 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 16. He won 6-2, 6-1 over Washington and Lee's Alex Brooke and 6-1, 6-0 over Bridgewater's Peter Hawkins in the semi-finals. Silverberg took on Haverford's Mike Gelberg in finals, winning 6-1, 6-0.
Samuel Stone advanced to the B6 finals, losing to York's Ryan Harvey 6-2, 6-2. He made his way there by defeating Adam Bamberger (Bridgewater) 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 16, Muhlenberg's Jason Richman 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and Jason Bonilla of Moravian 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals.
Armen Vartan made it to semi-finals of the B1 bracket, before falling to Hampden-Sydney's Shad Harrell 7-6(7), 6-3. Vartan defeated Mac Davis (Washington & Lee) 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 16 and Haverford's Ankur Arya 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
In other singles action, Alec Tunner advanced to semi-finals, Doug Silverstein and Peter Bookman made it to the quarterfinals in their respective draws. Tunner won his first two matches winning 5-7, 6-0, 10-5 over Drew Shreter (Moravian) and 6-4, 6-4 over Teddy Callow (Bridgewater). He lost 6-2, 6-1 to York's Colin Jones in the semifinals.
Silverstein defeated Neil Soni of Carnegie Mellon (6-2, 6-2) only to fall to Swarthmore's Seth Udelson 3-6, 7-6(5), 10-8 in the quarterfinals. Bookman won 6-0, 6-3 in the round of 16 over Moravian's Nick Yelito, losing 6-4, 6-3 to Travis Klevin of York.
In the B3 draw, Cameron Relic advanced to the quarterfinals, winning 6-3, 6-0 over Thomas Whaling of Christopher Newport and 6-4, 6-1 over Shennandoah's Michael Milanov. He lost to Kyle Lisco (Washington College) 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Walker Phillips advanced to consolation finals of the draw. After falling 6-1, 7-6(4), 10-6 to York's Paul Graci, he rallied winning three straight. Phillips defeated Thomas Waling from Christopher Newport (3-6, 6-2, 10-7), Bridgewater's Brad DeWitt (6-2, 6-2) and Anthony Rosselli of Grove City (7-6(6), 6-1) in the consolation finals.
In doubles action all four Diplomat duos made it to their draw's semifinals. In the B2 draw, Phillips/Silverstein and Bookman/Tunner both advanced to the finals. That match will be decided on our home court. Silverberg and Vartan team up in the B1 draw, defeating Swarthmore's Sam Clark and Tom Griffiths 9-8(2) in the quarterfinals and losing 8-6 to Johns Hopkins Mike Change and Will Grist.
Relic and Stone paired up in the B3 draw, defeating Nick Conte and Mike Steinberger from King's 8-4 in the round of 16. The duo defeated Grove City's Anthony Rosselli and Scott Yanak 9-8(6) in the quarterfinals only to lose 8-4 to Brent Floyd and Tim Gower of Bridgewater.
The Diplomats return action October 9th when they host York College to wrap up their fall season.
