FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Eric Rouff and Tim Belford each advanced to the finals round in their respective singles bracket to lead the Franklin & Marshall men's tennis team at the ITA Regionals held by Mary Washington this weekend.
Rouff defeated Michael Robbins in the first round of 16 with a 6-1, 6-2 decision, before posting a 7-5, 6-2 win over Lee Cebula to reach the semifinals. He used a 6-2, 6-3 victory to advance to the finals, only to fall to Drew Shreter in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 6-4).
Belford also fell in the championship match in three sets to Brent Floyd with scores of 6-1, 2-6 and 11-9. On the road to the finals, he posted two easy wins in the quarter and semifinals. Belford defeated Randy Speck 6-1, 6-2 and took down Benjamin Cohen 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.
Doug Silverstein and Paul Salierno each picked up a singles victory for the Diplomats.
In doubles action, Belford teamed up with Brad Nelson (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) to record wins of 8-1, 8-4 in the B2 group and then dropped an 8-3 decision in the semifinals. Salierno and Josh Calo (Salisbury, MD) fell 8-3 in the B1 doubles group and bounced back to tally an 9-8 (5) victory in the consolation bracket.
This tournament wrapped up F&M's fall season. The Diplomats return to action on March 28, 2009 at Haverford.
