Diplomats Finish Eighth in Nation

BOSTON – Franklin & Marshall's first foray into the top draw at the College Squash Association Championships proved to be a tough trip. The eighth-ranked Diplomats faced top-seeded Trinity at the outset. The Bantams bested F&M in the first of their three victories en route to a 13th consecutive national title. The loss on Friday was the first of three on the weekend. The Diplomats fell 7-2 to Cornell on Saturday, and by the same score to Dartmouth on Sunday, wrapping the season up with the eighth ranking they owned entering the weekend.

Trinity dropped just two games to F&M in the 9-0 win on Friday, the 242nd-consecutive victory for the Bantams.  They knocked off Rochester 6-3 on Saturday and finished the championship with a 5-4 win over Yale on Sunday.

The 7-2 scores on Saturday and Sunday are not indicative of how tight the matches were. The Diplomats scored a pair of wins in the top two positions against Cornell, but two more of F&M's players fell in five. On Sunday, the Diplomats got wins at the second and ninth position, while five players went to five with their Dartmouth opponent.

Gabriel and Gui de Melo accounted for F&M's victories against Cornell. Both matches went five. Ninth-ranked Gabriel upended fifth-ranked Nick Sachive for the second time this season, 11-7, 10-12, 11-4, 6-11, 11-7. Gui, ranked 26th, avenged a pair of 3-0 losses from the regular season. He toppled #18 Alexander Domenick of Cornell on Saturday, 11-9, 6-11, 11-4, 5-11, 13-11. He tripped up #14 Nick Sisodia of Dartmouth in five on Sunday (game scores not available). Ryan Mullaney also won in five for F&M.

The Diplomats are idle until next weekend's individual championships.
