F&M Buries Utica
LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall defeated Utica 2-0 in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday night at Tylus Field. The Diplomats move to 2-0 with the triumph, while the Pioneers drop to 0-2.
For the second straight night, the Diplomats tallied a pair of second-half goals following a scoreless opening frame. In the 53rd minute, Connor Finn slipped a through-ball into the box to a sprinting Ben Beaver, who drew a foul on Utica to setup a penalty kick opportunity for F&M. Beaver proceeded to bury the penalty shot with a low strike to the left side for a 1-0 Diplomat advantage.
The Diplomats consistently earned corner kick opportunities all night long, and in the 69th minute were finally able to capitalize. Jared Bomba curled an in-swinging corner into the box that found the head of Chris Scott, and Scott whipped a header on a rope that seemed destined for the back of the net, but a Pioneer defender made a sliding stop to prevent the goal. Gabriel Boni was in perfect position for the rebound, however, and ripped it home from inside the six-yard box to give F&M a 2-0 cushion.
The F&M defense was impressive once again as it limited the Pioneers to just six shots and two strikes on goal. T.J. White posted his second straight shutout and the ninth of his career, tallying two saves between the pipes.
Utica goalkeeper Anthony Caruso notched one save in the loss.
F&M held an 11-1 edge in corner kicks and outshot the Pioneers by a 16-6 count.
F&M returns to the pitch next Friday at 1:00 p.m. as they take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the Mayor's Cup Tournament hosted by Oneonta St.
