Second-Half Surge Lifts Diplomats Over McDaniel

Video

LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall tallied four second-half goals to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and earn a 4-1 victory over visiting McDaniel on Sunday afternoon in Centennial Conference (CC) action at Tylus Field. The Diplomats improve to 7-3-1 (3-2 CC) with the win, while the Green Terror fall to 3-7-2 (0-5 CC).

F&M nearly made it 1-0 in just the second minute of the game off the head of Shawn Ganow. Derek Pawlush sent a cross from the right side of the 18-yard box to Ganow, who was all alone in front of the net, but Ganow's header bounced just wide of the frame.

The Green Terror found the back of the net first in the 16th minute. Edgar Escobar settled the ball about 35 yards from goal on the right side and sailed a cross into a crowd of players near goal. Mike McClain was in the right spot and buried a header to the left side netting to give McDaniel a 1-0 edge.

McDaniel managed to keep F&M scoreless for the remainder of the first stanza and almost 20 minutes into the second, until the Diplomats opened the floodgates with four scores in the final 25 minutes of play.

Ryan O'Connell broke the seal on the Green Terror defense with his first goal of the year in the 65th minute to put the Diplomats on the board and even the count at 1-1. Preston Kilgore initiated the setup for the score with a cross from the right corner into the box. Max Watson then one-timed a pass back to the foot of O'Connell, who tucked his shot into the upper-left netting.

Just over 10 minutes later, the Diplomats would take the lead for good off another high-quality cross. Ryan Macomber shook his defender on the left side and found a wide-open Ben Beaver in front of goal and Beaver one-touched it home for a 2-1 F&M advantage.

The Diplomats wasted little time in extending the lead to 3-1 as Alex Grassi registered his first goal of the year just 46 seconds after Beaver's score. Sam Lane found Grassi on the left side near the edge of the box and Grassi rifled a blast to the near post.

Lane would go on to notch a second assist on the day in the 88th minute with a lofted feed towards goal to Ganow, who headed it in for the final 4-1 F&M advantage.

The Diplomats held a considerable edge in both shots (18-8) and corner kicks (12-3) en route to the victory.

Goalkeeper Zach Fernberger (6-3-1) totaled three saves in the win, while McDaniel's Zach Nibbelink (1-5-1) tallied two stops in a losing effort.

F&M travels to Susquehanna for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 pm.
