Melino’s Slice Secures Fourth Straight Win

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. - Matt Melino's slice from the top of the box was the only goal as Franklin & Marshall defeated Frostburg State 1-0 in men's soccer. His perfect strike from the top of the box worked from left to right in past the Bobcats' (4-2) Stephen Cavallo, who only faltered once in the face of near constant pressure applied by the Diplomats (4-1), who secured their fourth win in as many matches.

Melino's cashed in on a free kick following one of the Bobcats' 10 fouls in a chippy contest. Melino fired from the top left corner and watched the ball slide into the top right corner of the cage for his second goal of the season and his first game-winner in the young campaign. His goal was the breakthrough needed by an offense that had been on the doorstep all night.

F&M had the field tilted towards Frostburg's cage throughout, firing 22 shots to the Bobcats' five, but the Diplomats' struggled with accuracy sending 13 shots wide or over the mark. The solid scoring opportunities finished with quality shots, were met by Cavallo. He came up with six of his eight stops in the second half to keep his team in the game.

His counterpart, Zach Zamek, needed only three saves to pitch his second shutout this season and the 15th of his career. That moves Zamek within three blankings of Ed Steltz '07 for second on the career shutouts list, and within four of Eric Brief '84, who owns the record at 19.

Zamek's relatively quiet night was aided by an unrelenting back line anchored by Eric Corsini, who stepped up on several Bobcat forays into Diplomat territory.

The Diplomats improved to 4-1 with the win. F&M returns to action when Muhlenberg comes to Lancaster on Saturday to open Centennial Conference play.
