Three Straight for Men’s Soccer
LANDISVILLE, Pa. - The Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team was firing on all cylinders today as they defeated Gwynedd-Mercy 5-1 in the final round of the Brothers Pizza Blue Jay Classic Saturday evening. The Diplomats (3-1) won both games they played in the Classic, while the Griffins (2-3) lost each of their two.
F&M's Matt Melino got things started when he took a Mike Irving pass and found the back of the net from ten yards out in the eighth minute. The Diplomats struck again 1:30 later as Matt Krantz won a one-on-one battle for the first of his two goals, giving F&M a 2-0 lead. Irving pushed the lead to 3-0, when he fired home a Colin McMillian pass.
The Griffins cut the lead to 3-1 when Tom Petroski scored on a penalty kick early in the second half. F&M answered back when Krantz tapped in a Melino pass. Krantz was not done, firing a cross over the middle that McMillian shot to the back of the net in 87th minute.
The Diplomats shot an astounding 30 times, while F&M's defense held the Griffins to three. F&M earned 11 corners on the night while limiting Gwynedd-Mercy to three.
Zach Zamek earned the win, improving to 3-1 on the season. The Griffin's Mike Leonard took loss, stopping seven shots in the contest.
Franklin & Marshall returns to action when they host Frostburg State Wednesday, September 16 at 7:00 PM.
