Diplomats Fall in First Round
CARLISLE, Pa. - Two second half goals led Dickinson to a 2-0 victory over Franklin & Marshall in the first round of the Centennial Conference (CC) playoffs Wednesday afternoon. The loss brings the 2009 season to an end for the Diplomats as they finish at 9-6-3. The Red Devils (13-3-2) will face Muhlenberg on Friday in the semifinals.
Dickinson struck just 53 seconds into the second half when Tyler Meade broke through the defense to net the game-winner. In the 73rd minute the Red Devils added an insurance goal. Scott Carpenter received a pass from Zach Pritchard and placed the ball to far right corner of the net, putting Dickinson up 2-0.
The Diplomats had a great scoring chance on a corner late in the first half. Matt Melino served a cross to the far post that was headed by Shawn Ganow and just deflected over the crossbar by Dickinson keeper Cody Hickok.
Eric Corsini anchored a strong effort in the midfield, keying the attack for the Diplomats. He put three quality shots on goal in the game.
The Red Devils outshot F&M 15-9, while the Diplomats held a 7-3 advantage in corners.
F&M keeper Zach Zamek turned in solid performance, stopping six shots. Zamek falls to 9-6-3. Hickok finished with seven saves for Dickinson.
Johns Hopkins will face Swarthmore in the other semifinal game on Friday. The Championship game is scheduled for 7:00pm on Saturday. All games will be played at Muhlenberg.
