Diplomats Upend Bears

LANCASTER, Pa. – Kevin Mollihan netted six goals and handed out two assists to lead No. 17 Franklin & Marshall to a 17-13 win over No. 16 Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday evening. The Diplomats improved to 10-2, 5-0 CC while the Bears dropped to 8-3, 3-2 CC. 

Ursinus took the early lead with a score at 10:50, before the Diplomats answered with two straight and took a 2-1 advantage. Sean Rogers found Kevin Mollihan for the first score and Peter DeSimone connected with Tucker McBride for the second tally. The Bears tied the game at 2:40 and Rogers struck 38 seconds later to give F&M a 3-2 edge heading into the second quarter.

The Bears tied the game at 3-3 early in the second and Rogers put the Diplomats back on top with a score at 11:29. Ursinus netted two in a little more than a minute to take a 5-4 lead at 5:51. The Diplomats countered with four unanswered to close out the half and took an 8-5 lead at the break.

F&M's first goal came at 4:57 when Rogers netted an unassisted goal and Ronan Garcia hooked up with Rogers at 1:40 to put the Diplomats back out front. The Diplomats won the ensuing faceoff and struck eight seconds later when John Sommi found the net off a feed from Mollihan. T. McBride fed Mollihan with 22 ticks on the clock for the final point of the opening half.

Gerard Brown brought F&M within two, 8-6, and the Diplomats answered with two goals and went up 10-6 at 9:39. John Sommi netted the first one and Rama buried a pass from George Briggs. The Bears put another point on the board at 8:28 and F&M countered with three straight and took a 13-7 lead into the break. T. McBride finished off a pass from Rogers to start the run, Mollihan netted an unassisted score and Briggs buried a pass from T. McBride for the final point of the run.

The Bears took control early in the fourth with a 4-1 run to come within three, 14-11, with 10:20 left to play. Rogers found Rama at 14:06 for F&M's goal in the run. Mollihan answered with three straight to put the Diplomats out front by five, 16-11, at 6:15. Briggs and T. McBride assisted on two of Mollohan's goals and the Bears closed out the game with two unanswered.

Tommy O'Connor paced the defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls and Jarrett Donaghy came away with nine ground balls. Andrew Rose won 15-of-30 from the X and ended with seven ground balls.

Scott Hatch picked up the win with seven stops and improved to 10-2 while Elliot Shevitz took the loss with 10 stops.

F&M outshot Ursinus 51-34, held a 37-30 edge in ground balls and went 17-for-18 in clear attempts.

The Diplomats return to action next Saturday when F&M travels to Washington for 12:00 p.m. game.
