LANCASTER, Pa. – Jordan Barr buried a pass from Billy Kempner with 38 seconds left in overtime to deliver No. 15 Franklin & Marshall a 7-6 victory over Scranton in non-conference men's lacrosse action. The Diplomats improved to 8-3 while the Royals dropped to 7-4 this season.
The game was closely contested as neither team led by more than two goals. Scranton lit the scoreboard first at 9:03 in the first, but Barr struck under a minute later to tie the game at 1-1.
Scranton answered 45 seconds into second and F&M responded with two straight to go up 3-2. Kempner found Jamie McCulloch for the first score and Miller fed Kempner for the second with 7:02 left to the break. The Royals countered with two scores of their own and took a slight 4-3 edge into halftime.
F&M came out of the break strong with three unanswered goals and went up 6-4 with 4:18 left in the third. A.J. Reichert started the run with McCulloch adding the second before Kempner found Miller for the final score of the spurt.
The Royals put one through with just one second left in the third to come within in goal, 6-5, and tied the game 56 seconds into the fourth at 6-6. The teams traded shots through the remainder of the quarter, but neither could put one through sending the game into overtime and setting up Barr's game-winner.
Cameron Setian turned away 12 shots and improved to 8-3 while Ben Worthington took the loss with nine stops.
F&M outshot Scranton 39-28, forced 17 turnovers and went 17-for-20 on clears.
The Diplomats resume conference play on Saturday when F&M travels to Swarthmore for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
