LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's starting attack conspired for eight goals and seven assists to lead the Diplomats to a 12-8 win over Scranton at Tylus Field Wednesday evening. A six-goal run that spanned the second quarter and lasted into the third gave the Diplomats (7-2) the separation needed to outlast the Royals (4-4).
Sophomore attack Tristan Miller scored a game-high five goals, while junior Colin McKew contributed a goal and four assists. Freshman Billy Kempner scored twice and assisted on three to give F&M its second most productive day from the starting attack this season. The same crew accounted for 17 points in the loss to #5 Roanoke in the home opener.
Scranton scored three unanswered goals to grab a 3-2 advantage after 15 minutes of play. The Diplomats twitched the twine at the buzzer, but the officials waved the goal off. The non-goal lit a fire under the F&M bench. Freshman attack Matt Gillan sparked F&M's run with a goal 54 seconds into the second period. Kempner followed with a pair 35 seconds apart.
Kempner's first goal was an incredible solo effort. Scranton's starting keeper, Jeremy Dowiak, denied Kempner on the right side of the crease. The ball squirted loose behind, where Kemper scooped it up, tightroped the crease out in front and buried behind a sprawling Dowiak. He then cashed in on an extra-man opportunity when McKew offered a quick stick feed from behind.
The Diplomats made good on half of their four opportunities of the game. Dowiak recorded seven saves working the first 30 minutes. He yielded his net to Ben Worthington for the balance. Worthington turned aside four shots. Cameron Setain turned aside 11 for F&M. The Diplomats held a three-shot advantage, 38-35.
Scranton answered F&M's run with three-straight from three different players to make it an 8-6 game with 11:52 in regulation. Sean Coleman scored his second of the day in the stretch, but Miller answered the run. Mike Rufo's struck for his second, but Miller responded once again.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday at McDaniel.
