Diplomats Take First Round Lead at 2005 Centennial Conference Men's Golf Championship

YORK, PA - Carson Crooms (So., St. Petersburg, FL/Canterbury) and Kevin Philipow (Sr., Sudbury, Ontario/Heritage) carded scores of 75 to tie for second place and lead the Franklin & Marshall College men's golf team to a first round lead at the 2005 Centennial Conference Championship at the par-71 Heritage Hills Golf Resort.

The Diplomats (303) hold a six stroke lead over McDaniel College (309) as Franklin & Marshall has four golfers in the top seven in the championship field.

Ben Madonia (Jr., Clinton, NY/Clinton) is tied for fourth with Gettysburg's Brian Andrews with scores of 76, while Mark Quick (Jr., Forest Hill, MD/St. Paul's) is tied for sixth with Matt Anania of Dickinson and Tom Michaels of McDaniel as all three golfers carded a first round score of 77.

It marks the second straight year the Diplomats have taken the first round lead as F&M shot 306 to hold a two stroke lead over Swarthmore through the first day of the 2004 Centennial Conference Men's Golf Championship at Eagles Landing Golf Course in Ocean City, Maryland.

Overall, F&M finished second at the championship as Crooms earned medalist honors with a three round score of 230 (74-74-82).

In 2003, F&M shot 324 to place third through day one, nine strokes behind leader Gettysburg College, before rallying behind medalist Nick Leigh '04 to win the championship by 12 strokes over Muhlenberg College.

The championships will continue on May 1 before concluding on May 2.
