Franklin & Marshall Finishes Third at Glenmaura National Collegiate Men's Golf Invitational
SCRANTON, PA - Franklin & Marshall College's Carson Crooms (Fr., St. Petersburg, FL/Canterbury) shot a three over par score of 74 to finish with a two-day total of 148 and place fourth to lead the Franklin & Marshall College to a third place finish at the 2004 Glenmaura National College Invitational.
The finish raises the Diplomats' stock in a bid for the NCAA Championship field as Franklin & Marshall College finished with a two day score of 618, 18 strokes better than eighth place Gettysburg College which is also contending for a berth.
Leading the charge at Glenmaura, Crooms shot a 74 on day one to finish two strokes ahead of teammate Ben Madonia (So., Clinton, NY/Clinton) who carded a pair of 75's to finish sixth with a score of 150.
Kevin Philipow (Jr., Sudbury, Ontario/Region 18) shot 158 (78-80) and Dan Eggertsson (Jr., Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) finished with a total of 162 (81-81) to round out the top four scores, while Nick Leigh (Sr., Innisfil, Ontario, Canada) shot 177 (90-87) to conclude F&M's competitors.
Overall, Elizabethtown's Charlie Haines earned medallist honors for shooting a 145 (73-72) while Zac Oakley of Wesley (66-79-145) and Will Holt of Susquehanna (73-73-146) finished second and third.
The Diplomats' third place finish sets up an exciting conclusion to the season for F&M as the Diplomats remain one of five teams in contention for two spots in the NCAA Championship field from the Mid-Atlantic Region. Allegheny is a near lock to make the NCAA field, while Wesley, Franklin & Marshall, Rochester, Gettysburg and Susquehanna, which won the tournament title with a total of 602, will vie for the final two spots.
If the Diplomats earn a spot, it will mark the second NCAA berth in a year for F&M head coach Glenn Robinson who guided the men's basketball team to the NCAA Elite Eight earlier this year.
Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on April 19 at home on the greens of Bent Creek Country Club to host the annual F&M Spring Men's Golf Invitational on April 19.
