Storms Stop McDaniel Invite
ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. – Mother Nature spoiled F&M’s hopes of capturing the McDaniel Spring Invitational. The Diplomats were sitting in third place heading into Sunday, four strokes behind Carnegie Mellon and Susquehanna. That's how it wrapped up.
A severe thunderstorm quickly barreled through Adams County at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. The 15-minute storm conspired with several days of wet weather to leave a number of holes on the back nine of The Bridges Golf Club unplayable. After evaluation by the coaches and club staff, it was determined that finishing a full 36 was not feasible. As no one had finished the same nine holes ton Sunday, the tournament was reverted back to the 18-hole score.
Tiebreakers were used to name the medalists and team champion. Vincent DeMaio (Susquehanna) finished first on third handicap hole. Nick Decker (Elmira) placed second and Mitch Mercer (Susquehanna) came in third.
Carnegie Mellon finished first in the team standings on the fifth individual score. Susquehanna was second.
The Diplomats return to action next Sunday for the 36-hole Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship at Hershey.
