SCHEDULE OF PLAY
Saturday, Sept. 6 – First round, stroke play (18 holes)
Sunday, Sept. 7 – Second round, stroke play (18 holes).
After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 64 scorers, who
advance to match play.
Monday, Sept. 8 – First round, match play (18 holes)
Tuesday, Sept. 9 –Second round, match play (18 holes); Third
round, match play (18 holes)
Wednesday, Sept. 10 – Quarterfinals, match play (18 holes);
Semifinals, match play (18 holes)
Thursday, Sept. 11 – Final, match play (36 holes)
THE FIELD – The starting field will consist
of 264 golfers. Each golfer will play a single round on each of the
two golf courses before the field is trimmed to the low 64 scorers,
who will advance to match play at Milwaukee Country Club.
EIGHT FORMER MID-AM CHAMPIONS HEADLINE THE 2008
FIELD – Nineteen players, including 10 USGA
champions, were fully exempt from having to qualify for the
championship. The list includes eight U.S. Mid-Amateur champions
and three USGA Senior Amateur winners.

FOR THE WINNER – The champion receives:
- A gold medal and custody of the Robert T. Jones Jr. Memorial Trophy for the ensuing year.
- An exemption from local qualifying at the next U.S. Open, if still an amateur.
- An exemption from sectional qualifying at the next U.S. Amateur, if still an amateur.
- A 10-year exemption for the Mid-Amateur.
- A probable invitation to compete in the next Masters Tournament, if still an amateur.
- An exemption from sectional qualifying at the next U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, if eligible.
- An exemption from sectional qualifying at the next USGA Senior Amateur, if eligible.
THE TROPHY –The
Robert T. Jones Jr. Memorial Mid-Amateur Trophy was presented in
1981 by the Atlanta Athletic Club and the Georgia State Golf
Association. The most famous of all amateurs, Jones won five U.S.
Amateur and four U.S. Open titles for a total of nine USGA
championships, more than any golfer.
WHO CAN PLAY –Amateur golfers who will have
reached their 25th birthday on or before Sept. 6, and who have a
USGA Handicap Index® not exceeding 3.4, are eligible.
ENTRIES – Entries for the 2008 U.S.
Mid-Amateur closed July 16. The USGA accepted 3,839 entries for the
2008 championship. The record of 5,271 entries was set in 1997.
QUALIFYING – Sectional qualifying for the
U.S. Mid-Amateur was conducted from July 28-Aug. 18 at 68 sites.

PAR AND YARDAGE – The course at Milwaukee
Country Club is set to play at 7,004/6,958 yards and par 35-35 -
70. Brown Deer Park Golf Course, which will be utilized as the
second course for the stroke-play portion of the championship (two
rounds), is set up at 6,728 yards with a par of 34-36 - 70.

SLOPE AND COURSE RATINGS – The Milwaukee
Country Club course setup will result in a USGA Course
Rating™ of 74.2 and a Slope Rating® of 136. The Brown
Deer Park setup will result in a Course Rating™ of 72.6 and a
Slope Rating® of 133.
ARCHITECTS OF THE COURSES – H.S. Colt and
Charles Alison designed the course at Milwaukee Country Club, which
opened in 1911. The club was founded in 1894. George Hansen was the
architect of Brown Deer Park Golf Course, which opened in 1929.
THE USGA AND MILWAUKEE COUNTRY CLUB – Milwaukee
Country Club previously hosted the 1969 Walker Cup Match, won by
the USA, and the 1988 USGA Senior Amateur, won by Clarence
Moore.
Brown Deer Park Golf Course has hosted three U.S. Amateur Public
Links Championships, in 1951 (won by Dave Stanley), 1966 (won by
Lamont Kaser) and 1977 (won by Jerry Vidovic).
THE USGA AND WISCONSIN – This will be the
11th USGA championship conducted in Wisconsin. Most recently, Erin
Hills hosted the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links
Championship in June, won by Tiffany Joh. Whistling Straits in
Kohler hosted the 2007 U.S. Senior Open, which was won by Brad
Bryant.
FUTURE U.S. MID-AMATEUR SITES –The 2009 U.S.
Mid-Amateur will be conducted at Kiawah Island (S.C.) Club, from
Oct. 3-8, and the 2010 Mid-Amateur is scheduled for Sept. 25-30 at
Atlantic Golf Club in Bridgehampton, N.Y.
