LANCASTER, Pa. – Fresh off a successful fall campaign, Franklin & Marshall's men's rowing team aims to continue its string of strong showings this spring when the Diplomats open their 2018 schedule on Friday at St. Mary's College in Maryland.

2018 Diplomats

Last year's Varsity 8+ boat, which secured first place out of four competitors in the Petite Final of the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championships, returns a total of seven members, including All-MARC Novice recipient Ben Carroll

A nine-member freshman class, along with numerous key returners, will need to band together and help replace a talented senior class that included 2017 All-MARC Varsity honorees James Nelson and Jonathan Munro.

A Look Back at the Fall

F&M competed at two events in the fall, opening action at the Occoquan Chase on Oct. 15. The Diplomats claimed one first-place showing and a pair of second-place finishes. A Novice 4+ boat of Zerubabbel Asfaw (coxswain), Jesse Evers (4), Christopher Schiavone (3) Harris Karlin (2), and Nicholas Coury (1), placed first out of two boats with a time of 19:39.85, beating out George Mason (23:09.64), while the duo of Aidan Molloy and James Jarvis finished second out of five boats in the Men's 2X with a time of 25:52.05.

Jones Joins the Staff

Ellie Jones joined the Diplomats as an assistant coach for the 2017-18 season. Jones was a four-year member of the St. Lawrence rowing team, graduating in 2016 as a geology major. During her time at St. Lawrence, she served as the women's rowing program's representative on SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee). Before joining the F&M staff, Jones served as a coach at Westover School, helping to grow a relatively new program.

The Road Ahead

Following Friday's opening competition of the spring season, the Diplomats travel to Fairfax Station, Va. on Sunday, March 25 for the Occoquan Sprints. Those events make up two of six regular-season races currently on F&M's schedule.

The Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference Championships take place on Saturday, April 28 in Lewisberry. Both the men's and women's teams are also expected to compete in the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta, which takes place in Philadelphia on May 11-12.
