Diplomats Compete at MARC Championships

LEWISBERRY, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's men's rowing team collected 12 points to finish with a seventh-place finish out of nine boats at Saturday's 2017 Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championships. 

Marietta placed first with 52 points, followed by Bucknell in second (51) and George Mason in third (47). The MARC Title is open to all competing schools, even non-conference members.

A boat of Tamir Shemesh (coxswain), James Nelson (8), Aidan Molloy (7), Craig Fanto (6), Jonathan Munro (5), Ben Carroll (4), Trexler Hirn (3), Joel Cannon (2) and Brandon Schneider (1) made up F&M's First Varsity 8+ boat that advanced to the Petite Final with a time of 6:53.5 in their opening heat. 

In the Petite Final, the Diplomats dominated by placing first out of four boats with a time of 6:39.7. Mary Washington was the next-closest finisher at 6:45.1. 

The Diplomats' Second Varsity 8+ boat of Ryan Paulekas (coxswain), Calvin Coffeen (8), Lukas Grattan (7), Steven Nicodemo (6), Sam Parsons (5), Stuart Cattel (4), Chris Howe-Smith (3), Ngoun Lay (2) and Giuseppe Inglima (1) notched F&M's 12 points of the day with a fourth-place finish in the Grand Final and a time of 7:08.0. Bucknell won the event at 6:27.0. 

At the conclusion of the championships, James Nelson and Jonathan Munro landed on the 2017 All-MARC Varsity list, while Ben Carroll received All-MARC Novice recognition. 

Nelson, Trexler Hirn, Sean Hyland, and Ngoun Lay were named MARC Academic All-Conference, which is awarded to rowers who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, are in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility, and have competed in 75 percent of the varsity competitions or the MARC Championships.
