LANCASTER, Pa. – Coming off of a successful fall season, Franklin & Marshall's men's rowing program looks to carry over that momentum in the spring when the Diplomats open their 2017 slate of competitions on Friday at St. Mary's College in Maryland.

Seven of the nine members of the Varsity 8+ boat that took second in the petite final at the 2016 Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championship make a return to the water for the Diplomats. F&M finished ninth out of 12 boats after tallying 23 points as last year's Championship marked the first time that all competing schools, even non-conference members, were eligible for team scoring.
A total of four recruits and a number of talented walk-ons look to spearhead a freshman class that will need to help offset the production of one key graduating senior from last year's squad, captain Dillan DeCaro '16, who was a mainstay in the Varsity 8+ boat.
James Nelson – Sr.
Jonathan Munro – Sr.
Aidan Molloy – Jr.
Craig Fanto – Jr.
Captain's Jonathan Munro and Aidan Molloy are expected to provide leadership as key members of the Varsity 8+ boat. Senior James Nelson returns from a Varsity Pair Semifinal appearance at last year's Dad Vail Regatta. His teammate from that boat, junior Sean Hyland, is studying abroad in the spring. He was the only Diplomat last year to be named to both the All-MARC Varsity list and MARC Academic All-Conference.
A Look Back at the Fall
F&M took part in three regattas last fall, producing its most successful showing at the Head of the Occoquan in November when two of the Diplomats' five boats secured first-place showings in the event.
James Nelson competed in the Lightweight Single race and took the win in a field of eight competitors with a time of 19:36.59, while F&M also won the Lightweight 4+ race with a time of 17:57.27.
The Road Ahead
Following the spring's opening competition against St. Mary's, the Diplomats are set for a total of five events leading up the 2017 MARC Championships in Lewisberry on Saturday, April 29.
Key regattas include the Knecht Cup on April 8-9 and the Kerr Cup on April 15.
