LANCASTER, Pa. – Ursinus defeated Franklin & Marshall 102-86 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Thursday evening at the Mayser Center. F&M dropped to 3-2, 0-2 CC while the Bears improved to 4-1, 2-0 CC.
Ursinus quickly took an 11-3 lead three minutes into the game and a triple by Matt Knowles three minutes later kept the Bears up eight, 16-8, with 14:22 on the clock. The Diplomats responded with an 8-3 run to come within three, 19-16, but Ursinus countered with a 10-2 spurt to go up 29-18 at 8:29.
Matthew Tate hit a three at 5:48 to bring F&M within nine, and the Bears strung together an 11-4 run to take a 16-point lead, 46-30, at 1:41 and went into the locker with a 49-34 edge at the break.
Brandon Federici led F&M with 13 points and Eric Williams, Jr. paced the Bears with 17 at halftime.
The Bears continued to dominate in the second half and took a 63-44 lead at 15:39. F&M came within 11, 66-55, two minutes later, but the Bears responded with a 12-3 run and took a 20-point lead, 78-58, with 10:45 left to play. Ursinus held a double-digit edge the remainder of the game and led by as many as 23 points down the stretch.
Federici finished with a team-high 26 points on 9-for-18 shooting and Tate netted 21 for the Diplomats. Julius Stoma scored all 15 of his points from the line and grabbed five boards while Lionel Owona reached double-figures with 10 points.
Williams led Ursinus with a game-high 30 points and Knowles chipped in 23. Shane Stark recorded 14 while Zach Quattro ended the day with 11.
F&M returns to action on Saturday when the Diplomats travel to Haverford for a 3:00 p.m. tip.
