No. 9 Diplomats Down Colonials

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Hayk Gyokchyan and Jon Salandra posted double-doubles to lead No. 9 Franklin & Marshall to a 79-51 victory over Western Connecticut State Sunday evening in the final game of the Lancaster Rotary Tournament.

Gyokchyan finished with a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds. The senior went 7-for-8 from the stripe and dished out seven assists with three blocks. Salandra pulled down a career-high 14 boards to go along with 12 points and five assists.

Morgan Lee chipped in 13 points while Brandon Beckford shot 5-for-7 from the floor and scored 10.

Tre'Von Ferry had a team-high 16 points for Western (0-2) and Ryan McLaughlin finished with 10.

The first five minutes of the game were a battle as F&M (2-0) jumped out to an early six-point lead only to see it vanish as the Colonials went on a 7-2 run to take their only lead, 9-8, at 15:26.  The Diplomats quickly retook the lead before Western Connecticut tied the game at 13-13 with 12:01 left.  F&M countered with a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to go up 10, 27-17, and cruised into the break with a commanding 39-25 edge.

F&M continued the scoring in the second half and quickly went up 23 points, 50-27, five minutes into the half. The Diplomats maintained at least a double-digit lead the remainder of the contest and led by as much as 30 points.

F&M converted 18 turnovers into 24 points and shot 45.8 percent from the floor while limiting the Colonials to 30.6 percent.

Max Brewer and Gyokchyan were named to the All-Classic Team.

F&M opens its Centennial Conference slate on Tuesday when the Diplomats host Washington at 8 p.m.
