LANCASTER, Pa. - Alex Vescera and Aaron Gillette have been named the D3baseball.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team announced Monday. Vescera earned first team accolades at the utility spot, while Gillette nabbed second team honors at second base.
Vescera (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) grabs first team recognition as a utlity player after excelling at both shortstop and in a relief pitching role for the Diplomats. A First Team All-Centennial Conference (CC) selection at shortstop, the senior led F&M in batting average (.365), hits (62), RBIs (44), and doubles (15), tied for second in stolen bases (8), while also ranking third in runs scored (31). In CC play, he led the conference with a .432 batting average and ranked second in hits (32) and RBIs (22). On the mound, Vescera tied the single-season record for saves (6) and talied a 3.65 ERA in 12 1/3 innings of work, striking out 14 batters along the way.
Gillette (Owings Mills, Md./Beth Tfiloh) was a key contributor from the leadoff spot and second base for the Diplomats in 2013. The senior earned First Team All-CC honors for his performance. Gillette broke the single-season mark for stolen bases (30) while batting .356 with 16 RBIs and a team-high 50 runs scored. Gillette cracked the top-10 in the CC in multiple categories in conference play, posting league-highs of 21 runs scored and 10 stolen bases while also ranking fifth in on-base percentage (.489), sixth in hits (29) and ninth in batting average (.397).
F&M saw its memorable campaign come to a close last week at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Diplomats qualified for the regional by capturing the school's first CC title since 2006 and fourth overall with an impressive championship run through the CC Tournament. F&M closed out the year with an overall mark of 23-21.
