Gillette, Benenson Power F&M Past Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Aaron Gillette and Will Benenson combined for seven RBIs to power Franklin & Marshall past Ursinus 12-4 in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Tuesday. The Diplomats move to 13-12, 4-3 CC with the win, while the Bears slide to 6-15, 2-5 CC.

Gillette and Benenson accounted for over half of the Diplomats scoring in the 12-run outburst. Gillette went 2-for-5 with four RBIs and scored once, while Benenson posted a 2-for-4 line with three RBIs and touched home twice. Rob Anderson added two RBIs, while Joe Gallitto and Alex Vescera each tallied a pair of hits.

On the mound, Alex Guerra (3-1) kept the Bears in check with a strong seven-inning performance. The junior righthander fanned a season-high 10 batters and surrendered just six hits and one run to earn the victory.

Pat Andrews broke the scoreless tie in the third with an RBI single to center field, and the Diplomats put together two-run frames in both the fourth and fifth to take a 5-0 advantage. Benenson and Anderson registered RBIs in the fourth, while Gillette stole home in the fifth and Benenson knocked in another RBI with a sacrifice fly to center.

After a single score in the sixth on Gillette's RBI single, F&M broke open the contest in the seventh with a five-run frame. Gillette's three-RBI triple put the exclamation point on the inning, giving the Diplomats an 11-1 edge.

A.J. Wright (0-5) suffered the loss for the Bears in six innings of work, allowing seven runs on nine hits while striking out two and handing out five free passes.

James Hoff led the way for Ursinus at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs and a run scored.

F&M wraps up its season series with Ursinus at home on Friday. The CC contest is set for 3:30 p.m. at Caplan Field.
