GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Starter Paul Giulio allowed just five hits in seven innings while Alex Vescera and Aaron Gillette tallied two RBIs apiece to lead Franklin & Marshall to a 6-1 victory over Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Friday afternoon. The triumph completes the sweep of the season series for the Diplomats (12-10, 3-1 CC), while the Bullets drop to 15-8, 2-2 CC.
Giulio (1-2) picked up his first win of the year with a seven-inning outing, fanning five batters and walking four while surrendering just one run. Andrew Green and Gareth Fancher pitched shutout eighth and ninth frames in relief, respectively.
At the plate, F&M was faced with the task of going up against one of the top arms in the CC - two-time All-CC First Team selection Ryan Taylor (3-2). The Diplomats proved to be up to the challenge, as they scored six times on nine hits in Taylor's eight innings of work.
The Diplomats posted two-run frames in both the second and fourth innings to claim a 4-0 advantage. Rob Anderson opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Matt Mezansky, and Avery Attinson touched home on a Bullet fielding error to make it 2-0.
In the fourth, Vescera came through with a two-out, two-RBI single to center field that scored Anderson and Pat Andrews to push F&M out to a four-run edge.
Gettysburg got on the board with a single tally in the fifth off an RBI single by Pat Cody, but the Bullets would get no closer as Gillette's two-RBI single in the eighth gave the Diplomat pitching staff all the support it would need and F&M came away with the 6-1 win.
Andrews went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Diplomats, while Al Posch went 3-for-5 for the Bullets in the loss.
F&M returns home tomorrow for a CC doubleheader against Johns Hopkins. Game one is set to begin at 12:30 p.m.
