Dickinson Sweeps Diplomats

CARLISLE, Pa. - A pair of ninth-inning comeback attempts fell short for Franklin & Marshall as the Diplomats dropped a doubleheader at Dickinson in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday. The Diplomats (16-16, 5-7 CC) were edged 2-1 by the Red Devils (19-11, 6-6 CC) in the opener, before dropping game two by a 5-2 margin.

In game one, the Diplomats' last-inning comeback bid fell short as the Red Devils escaped with the 2-1 nail-biting victory.

F&M put at least one runner in scoring position in six different innings, but were unable to come up with enough hits at key moments throughout the contest, despite making a charge in the ninth.

Down 2-0 entering the final frame, Connor Devlin led things off with a double to the gap in left center, before being replaced on the base paths by pinch-runner Tyler Veterano. Pinch-hitter Brandon Theriault followed with an RBI double to right center that allowed Veterano to touch home from second base and just like that F&M was within 2-1.

Dickinson then brought game two starter Sean White to the mound in an attempt to close things out. Brian Erb's groundout to the right side of the infield allowed the tying run - pinch-runner Alex Wilson - to advance to third with one out, but White put away the next two batters to earn his first save of the season.

F&M starter Brendan DeMond allowed just two runs, one earned, in eight innings of work. DeMond (1-5) recorded four strikeouts and walked four while giving up seven hits.

Ryan Kamer (2-2) picked up the game one win for the Red Devils, pitching seven shutout innings. Kramer gave up six hits while walking four and striking out three.

The Diplomats held a 2-0 edge after five innings in the nightcap, but Dickinson answered with five runs in frames six through eight. Kevin Shields registered a sacrifice fly to start off the fifth-inning scoring for F&M, scoring Veterano from third, while Alex Vescera notched an RBI single through to the left side of the infield to plate J.T. Triantos.

Trailing 5-2 heading into the ninth, the Diplomats once again attempted a come-from-behind win as they brought the tying run to the plate with two outs, but White notched a final-out strikeout for Dickinson to wrap up the complete-game win.

White (5-1) totaled eight strikeouts and walked six, surrendering two runs on eight hits.

Lang (5-2) takes the loss for F&M after pitching 6.2 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. The senior lefthander stuck out five and walked just one batter.

Triantos went 4-for-10 on the day with one run scored, while Vescera and Veterano each tallied two hits in game two. Shields, Vescera and Theriault each registered one RBI in the twinbill.

Jordan Kaufman led Dickinson in game one with a 2-for-3 performance and two runs scored, while Joe Tursi and Mitch Helmandollar each notched RBIs. Tyler Rosa went 2-for-3 in game two with a solo homer, while Garrett Horan added two RBIs.

The Diplomats return to CC action at Haverford on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
