Diplomats Fall in Slugfest

LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall fell to visiting Washington College 15-12 in a high-scoring Centennial Conference (CC) affair that saw the two sides combine for 36 hits on the afternoon. The Diplomats drop to 16-14, 5-5 CC with the defeat, while the Shoremen move to 23-4, 8-2 CC with the series sweep.

Despite notching a season-high 21 hits, the Diplomats were unable to secure the victory as the Shoremen produced 15 hits of their own, including five in the crucial six-run top of the sixth inning.

Trailing 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth, F&M plated three runs in both the fourth and fifth frames to take the lead, 7-5. In the fourth, J.T. Triantos and Will Benenson registered back-to-back doubles, while Kevin Shields added an RBI single through the left side of the infield to pull the Diplomats within one.

The Diplomats then jumped on top in the fifth as Connor Devlin launched an RBI double to deep right center, Alex Vescera tallied an RBI infield single, and Benenson recorded his second RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to left.

Washington answered right back in the top of sixth, putting together a six-run, two-out rally to re-take the lead, 11-7. The Shoremen made the most of two F&M errors in the frame, and received RBI hits from Ryan Normoyle, John Rolewicz and Dwight Wilcox to take the four-run advantage.

The Shoremen tacked on three additional scores in the seventh to make it 14-7, but the Diplomats didn't go down without a fight as they tallied five runs over the next two innings to pull within 14-12 entering the ninth.

After Washington plated one run in the top of the ninth to push its edge to 15-12, F&M managed to bring the tying run to the plate as Vescera and Triantos each drew a walk, but A.J. Schmalfuhs recorded the final out for the Shoremen to earn his second save of the season.

Triantos went 4-for-5 with a double, one RBI and three runs scored, Shields went 4-for-6 with two RBIs, and Benenson posted a 3-for-5 line with three RBIs and touched home four times in the loss. Gillette and Rob Anderson each added three hits on the day, while Josh Mendelson registered two RBIs. Devlin notched two doubles with an RBI and scored once.

Rolewicz and Wilcox paced the Shoremen with four RBIs apiece, while Normoyle went 2-for-6 with two RBIs and touched home three times.

Sean Cosgriff (0-1) takes the loss on the mound for the Diplomats, while Tim Perrotta (1-0) secured the win for Washington after pitching just the fifth frame.
