Valente Stymies Ursinus

LANCASTER, Pa. - Matt Valente twirled a complete-game shutout on the mound to lead the Franklin & Marshall baseball team to a 2-0 triumph over Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Tuesday. The Diplomats improve to 14-11 (3-2 CC) with the victory, while the Bears drop to 10-12 (2-3 CC).

Valente (2-3) and Bears' starter Jake Kohler (2-2) went neck-and-neck on the rubber throughout the game's entirety, as both allowed just five hits while pitching every inning for their respective squads. While both pitchers put together stellar performances, it was Valente and the Diplomat defense that came through with big outs when they needed it most to propel F&M to the victory.

Ursinus attempted to jump out of the gates quickly as Brandon Sullivan and Garrett Smith opened the top of the first with back-to-back singles, before Kevin Wilson moved them both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt down the third base line. Faced with a jam right from the get-go, Valente never waivered as he delivered a strike out and forced a foul out from the ensuing two batters to come away unscathed.

The Diplomats notched runs in both the second and third frames, which would prove to be all the cushion Valente needed for the win. With two outs in the bottom of the second, Connor Devlin chopped a grounder to third base, but the throw to first was off target, allowing Brandon Theriault to cross the plate from third to give F&M a 1-0 lead.

Will Benenson pushed the Diplomats out to 2-0 edge in the third with an RBI single to left field that plated Alex Vescera.

From there, it was all Valente as the senior lefthander gave up just three hits the rest of the way. The Bears managed to tally two-out doubles in both the eighth and ninth innings, but Valente stymied each attempt by retiring the next batter, including one of his season-high nine strikeouts on the final batter in the ninth.

J.T. Triantos went 2-for-3 at the plate for F&M, while Benenson notched the lone RBI of the afternoon.

Smith batted 2-for-4 to lead the way for the Bears.

F&M and Ursinus will meet again on Thursday as the Diplomats travel to Collegeville, Pa. for a CC matchup at 3:30 pm.
