Diplomats Sweep Anna Maria

Diplomats Sweep Anna Maria

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Starting pitchers Alex Guerra and Evan Lang each pitched near complete games to help the Franklin & Marshall baseball team conclude its spring break trip to Florida on a high note with a doubleheader sweep over Anna Maria in two seven-inning contests on Saturday. The Diplomats (9-6) won game one 6-3, before taking game two 8-3. The Amcats drop to 4-6 with the pair of losses.

In game one, the Diplomats compiled six runs over the first three frames to take a commanding advantage early on. Connor Devlin's two-out, two-RBI single to left field put F&M on top 2-0 in the first.

After plating one in the second to push out to a three-run lead, the Diplomats tacked on three more scores in the third to lead 6-0. Kevin Shields and Sam Gladstone registered RBI singles, while Alex Vescera notched the other RBI of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left.

Anna Maria put together its highest scoring inning in the fourth, plating two, to pull within 6-2. The Amcats continued to hang around and threatened in the bottom of the seventh as they notched another run to come within three of F&M.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh, Paul Giulio sealed the deal for the Diplomats as he froze Mike Gaurnieri with a fastball on the outside corner for a called third strike and his fifth save of the year.

Guerra notched the win to move to 2-0 on the year. The sophomore righthander struck out three, walked two and gave up two earned runs in six innings.

In the second game, Lang (3-1) tossed six shutout frames to lead the Diplomats to victory. The senior tied his season high with seven strikeouts and nearly delivered a complete game, pitching 6.2 innings in the win.

After a scoreless first three frames, F&M exploded for eight runs throughout the next three innings, including five in the sixth. In the fourth, Brian Erb broke the scoreless tie with a two-RBI single over the outstretched glove of the second baseman, while Shields notched his second RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to center field in the fifth.

The Diplomats then added on five insurance runs in the sixth, highlighted by Will Benenson's two-RBI triple to right center - his second triple-bagger of the day, to take an 8-0 edge heading into the final frame.

Lang registered the first two outs of the seventh for F&M, before Chris Houston made his first career appearance and recorded out number three to wrap up the doubleheader sweep.

Shields went 4-for-6 at the plate on the day with three RBIs and scored thrice, while Benenson went 4-for-8 with two triples, one double, two RBIs and also crossed home plate three times. Gillette notched three hits throughout the twinbill with two RBIs, and Devlin also recorded two RBIs in the victories.

F&M returns to action on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup at Susquehanna at 3:30 pm.
