UMass-Boston Outlasts Diplomats

BABSON PARK, Fla. - Franklin & Marshall fell to UMass-Boston 9-5 in a back-and-forth seven-inning affair in its spring break opener on Sunday. The Diplomats drop to 3-4 with the loss, while the Beacons move to 2-0. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to rain.

Mark McCormack opened the scoring for UMass-Boston with a solo home run to right center in the top of the first to give the Beacons an early 1-0 advantage.

F&M evened things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. Josh Mendelson began the frame with a single through the left side of the infield, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Gillette down the left field line.

The Beacons regained the edge with two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Diplomats re-took the lead with a four-run fifth to make the count 5-3. With one out and runners on first and second, Brian Erb lined a two-RBI double into the gap in left center to give F&M its first lead of the contest. After Erb moved to third on a passed ball, Gillette poked an opposite field single that fell just inside the left field line to give F&M a two-run advantage.

The Beacons went on to tally three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, benefitting from a Diplomat error in each frame, to make to the final score 9-5.

The Diplomats managed to put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but Jeff Thomas closed out the win on the mound for the Beacons.

Brendan DeMond (0-3) notched 10 strikeouts and walked two in five innings of work in the loss for F&M. Kyle Szatrowski (1-0) earned the win after pitching a shutout sixth inning for UMass-Boston.

Gillette and Erb both recorded two RBIs on the day for the Diplomats, while Vescera also added an RBI. Mendelson touched home twice and added a hit in the loss.

Matt Consiglio led the way for UMass-Boston with a 2-for-3 line, four RBIs and two runs scored, while McCormack went 3-for-3 with one RBI and crossed the plate three times.

The Diplomats return to action on Monday with a doubleheader against Hamilton. Game one is set for 3:00 pm.
