Duranti Leads Diplomats Past Fords

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Mike Duranti earned his second victory over Haverford this season with a 6-5 win over the Fords in the first round of the Centennial Conference (CC) baseball tournament.  F&M will face Johns Hopkins, a 10-7 winner over Ursinus, tomorrow afternoon in Baltimore in the second round of the tournament. The game will be played one hour after the conclusion of Ursinus-Haverford game which starts at 9 am.

Duranti worked eight full innings with five strikeouts and three earned runs.  He walked seven, allowed just seven hits and induced nine ground outs to improve to 6-2 on the year.  
F&M (22-16) struck first with a run in the opening frame. Matt Will singled up the middle and moved to second after J.T. Triantos drew a walk. Avery Attinson advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt and Eric Bornstein plated with Will sacrifice fly to centerfield for a 1-0 F&M advantage. 
Haverford (30-7) put two across the plate with a two-run fourth.  Bobby Bailey's two-out double scored Jeremy Zoll then Alex Hudak brought Bailey across the plate to give the Fords a 2-1 lead.
The Diplomats immediately answered in the top of fifth with two runs to retake the lead.  F&M loaded the bases after a walk and two bunt singles.  Attinson hit a single to right field to score Alex Vescera and Russell Tischler brought Triantos home with a single through the right side to put F&M up 3-2.
Mike Amabile gave F&M a run in the seventh with an RBI single through the left side that scored Bornstein. Bornstein reached with a bunt single earlier in the frame and moved to third after a single by Tischler.
The Fords got one back in the bottom of eighth when Mike Galetta scored on a wild pitch for a 4-3 score.
F&M added two necessary insurance runs in the top of ninth. Tischler started things off with a stand up double into left center. Aaron Gillette pinch ran for Tischler and took third on a wild pitch. Amabile walked in the next at-bat and advanced to third after tagging up on foul out to the first base side. Freshman Pat Andrews cleared the bases with a single down the leftfield line for a 6-3 F&M edge.
Andrew's hit was clutch as Haverford got two runs across in the ninth.  Jeff Butera hit a two-RBI single with two outs to get the Fords back within one. Evan Lang settled in and retired the last batter to pick up his second save of the season.  
Will finished 3-for-3 with two walks and a run scored to pace the F&M offense.  Bornstein went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Tischler turned in a 3-for-4 performance from the plate with an RBI. Amabile hit 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Colin Sarafin took the loss in 6.1 innings of work. Sarafin allowed four runs on 13 hits and fell to 5-2.
