Diplomats Split with Garnet; Secure Third Seed

LANCASTER, Pa. --  Franklin & Marshall split a double-header with Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action Saturday afternoon.  The Garnet took the first game 6-3 while the Diplomats came away with 5-4 victory in the nightcap. F&M secured the third spot in the CC playoffs and will travel to either Johns Hopkins or Haverford on Friday.

Swarthmore (19-13, 9-9 CC) got on the board first with two runs in the first inning. Anthony Montalbano started things off with a double to left and was brought home with a single from Rory McTear. Niko Burnett plated McTear with a single up the middle for the second run of the inning.
 
F&M (20-15, 12-6 CC) got one back in the second when Zach Honecker brought Russell Tischler home with a sacrifice fly to right field. The Diplomats tied the game at two with a run in the third. Matt Will started the frame with a double to left field and J.T. Triantos reached with a walk. Both advanced a base on a wild pitch and Will crossed home on an Eric Bornstein sacrifice fly.
 
The Garnet went up 6-2 with a four-run fifth.  Ben Schneiderman, Mike Waterhouse, Burnett and Spencer Ross all picked up RBIs for Swarthmore in the inning.  F&M answered with a run in the sixth when Kevin Shields scored Tischler with a sacrifice fly to left field for a 6-3 game.
 
Josh Gray was saddled with the loss and fell to 2-3 on the year. Gray worked 4.1 innings with five strike outs and four earned runs.  Ignacio Rodriquez (5-1) picked up the win in 5.1 innings of work.
 
Tischler paced the F&M offense with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate and two runs scored.
 
F&M lit the scoreboard first in the second game with a run in the first inning. Will singled up the middle to get things started and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Triantos. Will moved to third on a wild pitch and crossed home after a single from Avery Attinson.
 
The Diplomats took a 3-0 edge with two runs in the third inning.  Will reached with a walk and moved to third after a passed ball and a throwing error by the catcher.  Attinson brought Will home again with a single to left.  Connor Devlin plated Triantos with a fielder's choice for the second score of the frame.
 
Swarthmore added a run in the top of the fourth before the Diplomats countered with two on their own in the bottom of the frame.  Triantos and Attinson both knocked in runs for F&M for a 5-1 edge. The Garnet added a run in the fifth and two in the seventh for a 5-4 score.
 
The Garnet got two on with two outs in the ninth, but Michael Morgenstern settled in and retired the last batter to pick up his first save of the year.
 
Brendan McCreary picked up the win in eight innings of work. McCreary (2-1) allowed four runs and struck out three.  Kyle Crawford (2-2) took the loss for Swarthmore with five runs in 3.2 innings.
 
Will went 1-for-2 with three runs and two walks.  Attinson finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
 
Franklin & Marshall returns to action on Monday with a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game at York.
