Blue Jays Rally to Defeat Diplomats

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown’s four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth led the Blue Jays to a 6-5 victory over Franklin & Marshall in a non-conference baseball game Sunday afternoon. The Diplomats fall to 7-9-1 while the Jays improved to 9-6.

Trailing 5-2 in the ninth frame, Elizabethtown placed its first three batters on base to start the inning. Steve Motika singled to start while Brain Kiernan and Dillon Tagle were both issued walks to load the bases. Brendan McCreary came in the relieve Eric Lang and induced a ground out to first, scoring Motika. Matt Reade singled up the middle, putting the Blue Jays within a run, 5-4. McCreary attempted to pick off Reade at first, but his throw went high, allowing Kyle Gable and Ryan Donahue to cross the plate to win the game.

The Blue Jays got on board early with a run in the first innings. F&M countered with a run in the second when Josh Mendelson’s single brought Jay Anderson home, for a 1-1 ball game.

F&M scored two runs in the third to take the lead. Matt Will started the frame off reaching first on a throwing error by the shortstop. J.T. Triantos walked in the next at-bat, moving Will to second, giving the Diplomats a runner in scoring position. Bill Murray plated Will with a double down the leftfield line, giving F&M a 2-1 edge. Nick Rolnick’s grounder to the shortstop brought Triantos home for the second score of the inning.

F&M added a run in the fourth and one in the ninth and the Blue Jays scored a run in the fifth.

Anderson finished hitting 3-for-5 and scoring two runs. Rolnick, Murray and Triantos all knocked in a run. Blue Wells and Mendelson also picked an RBI each.

The Diplomats used a pitching by committee approach with seven players taking the mound. McCreary took the loss.

Zach Mills picked up the win for Elizabethtown. Mills worked the ninth, giving up one run on three hits.

Franklin & Marshall returns to the diamond on Wednesday when the Diplomats face Ursinus at 3:30 p.m.
